Can you use a magnet mount and still do wireless charging?

Okay, everyone has a smartphone. Many people prefer to charge their phones wirelessly. Many people wish to mount their phone in the car. Here is where you run into problems.

How magnetic phone mounts work

Everybody knows the basics of magnets. It's wrong to assume that any phone can be used with a magnet mount. Many phones have aluminum backs, which aren't magnetic. Some phones also have glass backs that aren't magnetic.

Most magnet mounts include a small piece of metal that can be stuck to the back of your phone, or to your phone case. This seems like an easy solution.

Unfortunately...

If your phone is intended to charge wirelessly, placing a large piece of metal on its back will block the wireless charging coils. You have several options for wireless charging and a magnet mount.

1. Maybe you shouldn't.

This is unfortunately the best and most sensible solution to the problem. You may want to avoid wireless charging if magnet mounting is important to you. It will be just like 2015, where you use a cord to charge your device. It's not great, but it's convenient.

2. Attach the metal to another object.

Attach the metal plate to your phone instead of attaching it to your phone. This will make it more efficient than if it were attached to the phone with a metal plate and then placed in a case.

Pop sockets or other grips on your phone have become very popular in recent years. To charge wirelessly, you will need to remove the device from your phone. If you do this, the metal plate at the back of the phone will provide a strong connection.

3. Put the metal plate on the top or bottom

The middle is where the charging coils are located for your phone. You can place the plate on a larger phone, such as a "plus", where it will not interfere with the charging coils or the camera.

This is the best way to go if you have a large enough phone. You can mount the metal plate in several ways. For temporary fixes, you can use masking tape to secure it. You should ensure that your phone can be charged and that your magnet mount can be used. Although it may take some time, larger phones should be able to do this.

Are there any solutions?

It's possible, and it just takes a matter of doing so. The charging coils for phones look like a donut. There is plenty of space for manufacturers to place a small metal plate inside. Magnet mounts will likely take off as they add almost no weight to your phone and aren't being used.
