How to use Game Bar on Windows to Screen Record

This is how you record on Windows 10 with the Game bar. You'll need to set up the Windows Game Bar if you haven't already. Follow these steps once you have it set up.

  1. Next, open the program or app you wish to record.Windows + GClick on the keyboard. This will open the Game bar overlay.

  2. You'll find several widgets in the Gamebar overlay.Capture?Audio?PerformanceMaybe?Xbox Social. You can also find a main toolbar at top of screen that corresponds to these widgets.

  3. Click the button to capture your screenRecordClick the buttonCaptureWidget

  4. The recorder appears in upper right corner of the page once the recording begins. To view the recording time, click theStopYou can also use the button (a blue circle with a square in its center) to control your microphone.

  5. Once you are done, press theStopA message flyout appears to the right of the screen letting you know that you've created a recording. To access the recording, you can either click on this message or navigate to it in your browser.VideosFile.

Limitations on Windows 10's Game Bar

You can easily record your screen with Windows 10's Game bar. However, there are some caveats.

  • Some applications, such as File Manager, cannot be captured with the Game bar.
  • It is not possible to capture your desktop. You must be taking screenshots of an app.
  • You won't see another window if you capture it while you are recording. But, the cursor movement will show it.
  • Apps can be downloaded from the Windows Store, or you can use existing apps on your computer.

How to screen capture in Windows 10 using PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint may be better if you want to capture your desktop and multiple windows. It is faster to set up than the Game bar and offers more versatility.

  1. Go to Powerpoint, open a new presentation and click on the "Open" button.Insert>Screen recording.

  2. Your desktop will be displayed and the PowerPoint presentation will shrink. Click here if you do not get prompts to choose the area that you wish to record.Select AreaDrag your cursor to the area you wish to record. The area you wish to record is marked with a red, dashed box.

  3. After you have set the area, clickAudioTo turn on or off the audioRecord PointerYou can capture the pointer (or not) as you move around your screen. Once you are satisfied with the setting, clickRecord.

  4. After a short countdown, your recording will go live. You may also see the control panel that controls your recording disappear. The control box for your recording will be re-appear if you move your cursor to the top or middle of the screen.

  5. You can choose to pause or stop a recording by selecting the appropriate optionPauseOrStopFrom the Recording menu.

  6. After you have stopped the recording, PowerPoint will take you back to PowerPoint and the recording will be inserted into the slide that you selected. Right-click the recording to save it to your computer.Save MediaFrom the menu.

  7. Navigate to the location you wish to save the file, then clickSave.
