How to responsibly get rid of the stuff you’ve decluttered

 You may have had the chance to sort through the clutter that has built up over time if you've lived at home for more than a year. Perhaps you have recently upgraded some of your possessions and realized that you don't have enough space for all the new stuff.

No matter the reason, you should get rid off all your tech, clothes, books and other items responsibly. What should you do next?

You know that dumping the stuff is not an option. Recycling and reusing old, unneeded items has been a key part of the global effort to protect the environment. Many cities and states require the recycling of tech, metals, and other materials. However, even if the law doesn’t mandate it, there is no reason to throw away more trash.

It is important to find the best way to get rid of your stuff and do the least damage to the environment. It may have been harder than usual to find the right way to dispose of your stuff during the recent pandemic. There are still many online services that can help you get rid of unwanted items responsibly and make money.

Depending on the items you wish to dispose of, and the method you prefer, here are some websites to consider.

TECH

Are you looking to purchase a new phone? Check out trade-in offers from manufacturers for your Pixels and Macs before you buy.

If you don't like the offer from the vendor, you can sell your tech. You can sell your device online to get something in return. Decluttr, for example, will give you a tentative quote on your phone or tech. It also accepts CDs, DVDs and books. You can also sell through a service like Swappa, which charges the buyer, not the seller, a fee (but the seller does have to pay PayPal's transaction fee). Amazon also has a trade-in program, although payment will come in the form of a gift card.

It can be donated to charity. Many programs offer computers to those in need. Computers with Causes, for example, gives tech to people who are in need; World Computer Exchange sends laptops and desktop computers to libraries and schools in developing countries; Globetops allows you to choose who gets your laptop by uploading descriptions online. Or you can donate your tech to Globetops. It's a good idea, as with all charitable institutions, to verify their legitimacy before donating. There are many online information sites about charities.

It's best to get rid of any tech that's so outdated that no one wants it. You may actually be breaking the law if your TV or computer is just thrown away. It all depends on where you live. According to a 2018 article written for the National Council of State Legislatures, "25 states and the District of Columbia have enacted legislation establishing a statewide electronic waste, or e-waste, recycling program."

There are likely to be some recycling programs in your area. Many electronics stores will offer recycling, sometimes for a fee. All you need to do is bring your items to the store. Or you can try Earth911 to find the nearest recycling center. Be sure to check with the store or center before you go; there may be some recycling programs that are still in use due to the pandemic.


It can be difficult to dispose of batteries safely. Call2Recycle can help you find out where to drop off that bag of batteries you've been accumulating. If there aren't any facilities within reach of your home or office, BigGreenBox will dispose of it for you -- but not for free. Prices begin at $36 for a box that will hold up to 10 pounds of batteries (which includes shipping and handling).

If you still have your parents' old BlackBerry PDA/Commodore 64, it may be worth looking into donating it to a museum. Although there aren't as many tech museums accepting donations as there were in the past, it is worth looking into if you have something unusual or old. You can fill out forms at both the MIT Museum as well as the Computer History Museum.

CLOTHING

There are three types of clothing websites: those that sell the most fashionable and high-end clothing, jewelry, and clothing, as well as those that deal with major brands and traditional dealers.

Consignment companies are at the top end of the market. They act as intermediaries between buyers and sellers of designer clothes, jewelry and other valuable items. These companies, like Vestiaire Collective and TheRealReal.com, authenticate every product sold through them. They will not accept older fashions so you don't have to worry about getting rid of that jacket that has been sitting in your closet for 10+ years. These may be the right place to sell if you are a shopper who is always looking for the best styles.

Side note: If you don't want to wear your business clothes anymore, there are many organizations that will accept them in good condition. This is especially important for job hunters. These organizations are usually local. For example, the NYC area has Bottomless Closet for women, and Career Gear in men. GuideStar or Charity Navigator are great resources for finding charities in your area.

For less upscale clothing, sites like Tradesy handle both upscale and mid-priced clothing, shoes, and jewelry. Tradesy accepts a simple commission from the seller but will verify the authenticity of the label. You can also try sites like ThredUp, which handles thousands of major brands; you send your gently used clothing directly to the service, and if it accepts (and sells) your clothing, you can choose from cash or credit from either ThredUp or an associated retailer.

It may be more difficult to get rid your old clothes than you thought. Many charities that used to accept worn or outmoded clothing have become pickier, partly because the business of reselling old clothes overseas is waning. Smart consumers are also becoming more wary about drop-in clothing bins, which many of them actually belong to for profit companies.

If you can't make it to your local Goodwill store, one place to try is Vietnam Veterans of America. If it is available in your area, you can schedule a pickup on its website. GiveBackBox encourages you to use the box your new clothes were shipped in to send your old stuff (it asks that you send five or more items) to a charity; the site provides a prepaid shipping label.

BOOKS

There are still books made from paper, not pixels, so you might want to get rid at least some.

One solution is to sell your books through a site such as Amazon, although that can get complicated. You must set up an account as an individual and pay Amazon 99c per book. Your chances of selling are slim. There are many professional booksellers who use Amazon for extra inventory. They will sell their books at 99 cents plus shipping fees, making it difficult to compete.

Popular resellers like AbeBooks and Powell's are also available. They will need the ISBN number and condition of your book(s). You then mail the books to them, and you will reap your reward.

You can use AbeBooks or Bookbyte to get rid of textbooks that you don't want anymore. We all know how costly these can be. BookScouter will show you the prices offered by a variety of booksellers, along with user ratings, and you can choose which one to sell to.

If you just want to get rid of your books and aren't worried about getting paid, there are sites like Better World Books, a for-profit company with drop-off boxes around the country, that uses a percentage of its earnings to promote literacy. There are also specialized organizations online that help you send books to people who need them, such as Books for Soldiers.

Local libraries are also an option. People can unload books from libraries and used bookstores. Libraries still accept books they can add to their collection, sell or give away. It's a good idea, however, to check the library's website online to see if they accept donations. You can also call them if you're really nostalgic. Most used bookstores will accept books in exchange for a small fee or credit towards book purchases. Google Maps is the best way to check if any are available in your area.

Finally, you can create your own library. The Little Free Library site provides all the information you need to start a tiny book-lending program right outside your house (or how to find the nearest one). You might even be able to donate to a neighbor who has started one.

ALL ELSE

When you want to sell your stuff, one of the places people still think of is eBay. This is the place where many buyers look when searching for deals. eBay sellers can be anyone, from individuals selling once-only to professionals. Here's how it works.

  • You get up to 250 free listings a month for most product types; after that, it's 35 cents per listing.
  • After your item is sold, eBay will collect 12.55 percent up to $7500, and 2.35 percent for any value above $7,500.
  • There are exceptions to this rule: 5.85 percent for instruments and basses (with 2.35 per cent on values above $7,500); 3.5% for heavy equipment (with 0.5% for values greater than $15,000); and 14.55 percent each for movies and TV (with 2.35 per cent on all values). There are other exceptions; you can find them all here.

(Note that eBay also has different fees for people who have what is called "managed payments" and for various levels of professional sellers.)

Although selling on eBay can be time-consuming, it is possible to make a profit. It is a good idea to search for the price ranges of similar objects or your object.

You can also sell your stuff at other places. If you're on Facebook, you can sell stuff using its Marketplace. Selling locally is the best option. You can meet buyers to exchange the items or arrange for drop-off. You can also arrange to ship your item; if so, there are a number of rules to follow. NextDoor, an old friend, and Craigslist are two other sites that can help you sell or donate items locally.

For giveaways only, Freecycle is a service that introduces local people who have stuff to other local people who want that stuff. After you have found your local Freecycle, you will be instructed on how you can advertise the items you are giving away. Freecycle will send your email to all its subscribers. Anyone who is interested in the object can reply. Your email will be pushed to their email address. After that, you can contact the person to arrange for the giveaway. You've made two people happy: you and the winner.

How to use Edge’s tools to protect your privacy while browsing

 Version 80 of Microsoft's Edge browser, now based on the Chromium source code, launched on January 15th, and with it came an increased focus on privacy.

Edge has tools that allow you to block first-party and third-party cookies. These cookies are used to keep your logged in secure or to remember items in your shopping basket. Here are steps to modify your browser settings, view trackers stored on your browser and delete them. We also discuss Edge's handling of fingerprinting, a method that identifies users through collecting information about their system configuration.

DEAL WITH TRACKERS

The new version of Edge blocks trackers by default using one of three different levels of protection. "Balanced" is activated upon installation and blocks certain third-party trackers, as well as any trackers that are designated as "malicious." It lowers tracking prevention for organizations with which you interact regularly. You can switch to "Strict" for more control. This will block most third-party trackers across all sites.

To modify your level of protection

  • Click the three dots at the top of your browser window to go to "Settings" then "Privacy & Services."
  • Turn on "Tracking prevention", then choose the level you wish to use.

ADVANCED TRACKING SETTINGS

Edge offers three simple tracking modes. However, Edge allows you to dive deeper and see which trackers are blocked. You can also make exceptions for specific sites.

  • Look for the link "Blocked trackers" on the Privacy and Services page. It is located just below the three tracking prevention modes. You can see all trackers Edge has blocked.
  • Below that link is the "Exceptions", where you can select any sites you wish to have tracking turned off.

Clicking on the lock symbol at the left of the top address field will show you an account of how effective your tracking prevention has been. You can view and modify site permissions and cookies, as well as allow or disallow pop-ups.

CLEAN UP YOUR COOKIES

Edge has the ability to delete multiple types of data when you close it. This includes browsing history, passwords and cookies.

  • You can find the section "Privacy & Service" under "Clear browsing Data" below.
  • Click the arrow to the right of "Choose which files to clear each time you close your browser."
  • You can toggle on any data category you wish to clear each time Edge exits.

You can also manually delete your cookies and other data at any time:

  • Click on the button next to "Clear browsing information now" to open a smaller window that offers several options.
  • Choose the box to remove cookies and other site data or any other data.
  • Click "Clear now"

Other privacy options are available on the Privacy and Services page. These include the ability to send a Do Not Track request (although its usefulness can be questionable) or to select your search engine.

FINGERPRINTING & AD BLOCKING

According to Microsoft, the three tracking prevention modes (especially the Strict mode) will help protect against the type of personalization that leads to fingerprinting.

Edge doesn't block ads natively but you can install ad-blocking extension. The browser's new Chromium base means that many Chrome extensions, as well as extensions available from the Microsoft Store, will work with Edge. This is a significant advantage.

How to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free

 Microsoft's Windows 7 and Windows 8 users no longer qualify for the free upgrade. However, you can technically upgrade to Windows 10 without any additional cost. While Microsoft has removed the special upgrade offer sites, the company continues to activate Windows 10 licenses for people who upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

ZDNet's Ed Bott has been testing this method for years, and the free upgrade still works. It is also very easy to upgrade Windows 7 from Windows 10, especially since support has ended for this operating system. Assuming your PC supports the minimum requirements for Windows 10, you'll be able to upgrade from Microsoft's site.

It is important to keep in mind that the Windows 7 to Windows 10 update could cause your apps and settings to be lost. Although you have the option to save your files and personal information, it is not always possible to retain all your apps due to differences between Windows 10 & Windows 7. You should keep track of the apps that you use frequently so you can download the installers again. Windows 8.1 can be upgraded in the same manner, but you don't need to delete your apps or settings.

Here are the steps to upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10

  • Backup all important documents, apps, data, and​​​​​ files
  • Head over to Microsoft's Windows 10 download site
  • Select "Download tool now" in the Create Windows 10 Installation Media section and then run the app
  • If prompted, select "Upgrade this computer now"

  • Then, you'll be asked if you would like to keep your files or start from scratch.Keep this in mind:All settings and apps will be deleted if you choose to start over or keep your files intact for Windows 10 upgrades.
  • After the upgrade is completed, you will receive a digital licence for Windows 10. This can be found under Settings > Security > Activation.

How to type special characters on a Windows PC

 Let's say you are writing a report and suddenly you have to write "Jones Nee Berkowitz" or "anos" in Spanish. How can you add special characters to these letters?

Special characters (also known as diacritical marks) may be more common in certain languages, but there are plenty of circumstances in which English speakers may need to use them. Because they are so rare in English language, native English speakers might not know how to add them to emails, documents, or other writings. It's not difficult to add them to your Windows document, although it's not quite as smooth an operation as on a Mac, where all you have to do is hold the appropriate key down. You would have to search for the symbol characters ...) once upon a while.

USE THE TOUCH KEYBOARD

Enable the Windows touch keyboard to add diacritical marks in a document. This is the easiest way to do so. This method was first discovered by Ed Bott, ZDNet. If you use a Windows tablet, or a tablet-mode PC, the touch keyboard will automatically appear. You can also use the keyboard icon in the taskbar on the right side, near the date, if you don't have touchscreen. It's not visible? Here's how to get it.

  • Right-click the taskbar
  • Click on the "Show touch keyboard" button

If you wish to use a particular character,

  • Click on the touch keyboard icon
  • You will see the touch keyboard. Press the long press button (or your touchscreen finger) on the letter that you wish to use.
  • There are now several keys that will show you how to type the letter with different symbols. You can choose the one that interests you and it will be added to your document.
  • Click on the emoji button (to the left of "space bar") to type an emoji.
Choose the special character that you would like to appear in your document.

USE THE EMOJI KEYBOARD

Windows' Emoji keyboard is another keyboard you have access to that allows you to add special characters directly into your text. It's primarily used to add emojis and other characters to your text. It's easy to use.

  • Press the Windows key with the Windows symbol (the one that has the period key) and hold it down.
  • You will see a range of emojis when the emoji keyboard opens. Click the symbol tab at the top (the third one from the left).

  • Select the type you want from the menu at the bottom. Scroll down until you find what you are looking for.

USE THE CHARACTER MATERIAL MAP

You can also use the character map to add special characters to Windows. It is a simpler and less elegant version of the touch keyboard, but provides the same service.

You can access it from your Windows 10 computer:

  • In the search box, type "character" and select the Character Map app
  • A pop-up map will appear showing you a variety of special characters that can be used with a particular font. Click on the drop-down menu at the top to change the font.

  • Click on the letter or special characters you wish to use in your document, then click the "Select" button. These characters will appear in the "Characters for copy" field.
  • After you have selected the characters that you like, click the "Copy” button. Then paste them into your document.

USE THE US INTERNATIONAL KEYBOARD

The US International Keyboard is a great option for English speakers who use special characters often. It maps your keyboard so that you can add these characters more easily. Thanks to "shiroledat", for the tip.


You first need to add the US International Keyboard (USIK) to Windows.

  • Go to Settings > Language & Time > Language
  • Click on "Preferred languages", assuming that you are an English speaker in the US, and then click on "Options".
  • If you have never been to the "Keyboards section", you will see a single keyboard icon called "US/QWERTY." This is the keyboard map that you are currently using. Just above the keyboard, click on "Add a keyboard."
  • Scroll down to QWERTY / United States International in the pop-up menu and click it
Click on "Preferred languages" then click on "English (United States)," and then "Options."
 
Click on "Add a keyboard" and look for "United States-International."

You can choose to use either the standard US keyboard, or the US International Keyboard. The lower-right corner of your taskbar near the date shows which keyboard is currently active. You will see either "ENG/US" or "ENG/INTL." Click on it to switch between them, or hit the Windows key+space bar.

To switch keyboards, click on the icon.

You have two options to give your US International Keyboard a unique character:

  • To get the most common combinations, use the Alt key on the right hand and the letter you want. Alt+e will produce: e
  • The symbol you wish to use, then the letter that you would like to use it with. If you press the symbol first and then the "n", key, you will get: n

USE THE UNICODE-VALUE

After you have chosen a letter, special character or letter, look in the lower right corner of the character map and you will see "Keystroke", followed by "Alt", and a four-digit numerical number. This number represents the Unicode value of the symbol, and it's the time-honored standard for adding characters.

It can be quicker to add a special character every now and again using your keyboard. There are many ways to accomplish this, but here are two that are the most straightforward (each with its limitations).

  • The four-digit Unicode value can be typed by pressing the Alt key. This will work if you have a separate number pad and enable the NumLock key.
  • You can use Microsoft Word, WordPad or Outlook to enter the Unicode value, then press Alt-X.
  • You can also use the Control key and a symbol to accent the letter. If you are in a Microsoft application, for example, pressing Ctrl+" and "e", it will produce "e".

Windows 10 basics: how to uninstall apps

 You might need to remove programs and/or applications from Windows 10, for a variety of reasons. It could be that you want to free up space or that you no longer need the application.

There are many ways to uninstall an app, depending on which one you want to delete. Try another method if one doesn't work.

Not all apps can be uninstalled with the methods listed here. Some built-in apps, such as Microsoft Edge, can only be uninstalled with a tool like Windows PowerShell, which uses a command-line interface. Deleting these apps is a much more complex process that you can follow here.

The process for most applications is quite straightforward.

UNINSTALL AN APP FROM THE START MENU

Simple apps such as those from Microsoft Store can be uninstalled easily from the Start menu. You may need to perform a formal uninstall for larger programs and apps that may save settings in the Windows Registry or other areas of your system. You should not delete your app, but uninstall it properly.

Here's how you can get started:

  • Click the Start button.
  • Find the app.
  • Right-click the app and choose "Uninstall."
Some apps can be uninstalled directly from the Start menu.
  • You will see an "Uninstall” button in the pop-up window. This message is accompanied by the message "This application and its related information will be uninstalled." Click the button to close the window.
To uninstall the app, click on "Uninstall" once more.
  • If the application is more complicated, you will see a button saying "Uninstall." This will take you to the Control Panel's "Uninstall or modify a program" page.

UNINSTALL AN APP USING THE CONTROL PANEL

You can also access this page by entering "Control Panel" into the search bar, and then clicking on the "Uninstall a Program” link under the Programs heading.

  • Scroll down until you find the program that you wish to delete. (If it isn't there, you might need to uninstall via settings -- the instructions are here).
  • After you have found the program, click on it to open the "Uninstall/Change" page. You can also click on the program and choose "Uninstall" or 'Uninstall/Change".
To uninstall an application, highlight it and then click on "Uninstall" or "Uninstall/Change."
  • The steps that follow depend on which program you are using. Some applications will automatically be deleted and you won't need to do anything. A pop-up window may appear asking you to confirm. In this case, click "Uninstall" to confirm.
Follow the prompts to uninstall the program.
  • When you are done, click "Finish".

UNINSTALL AN APP USING SETTINGS

Another, and perhaps more convenient way to uninstall a program in Windows 10 is to use the Apps & Features section.

  • Click the Start button.
  • To open settings, select the cog.
  • Open "Apps"
  • Select the "Apps and features" option from the left-hand sidebar to navigate to it. You can also search for "Apps & features" in the taskbar search box and click on "Add or Remove Programs".
  • Scroll down until you find the app that you wish to delete and click on it for more information.
Select the app that you want to uninstall.
  • Click the "Uninstall" button. If the button is grayed, it means you cannot uninstall it using the normal Windows 10 interface.
  • A small window will open. Click the "Uninstall" button.

How to make and receive calls on your PC

 Microsoft's Your Phone app can route photos, incoming messages, and text messages to Windows 10 PCs. Its latest feature update added something even more useful: the ability to make and receive calls on your PC without reaching for your phone. In case you need to move mobile, the app allows you to seamlessly transfer calls between your phone and PC.

It's not difficult to set things up, but there are some requirements you should be aware of before you begin the steps.

A computer (any type, desktop, laptop or ARM-based), running Windows 10 version 1803 and any Android version 7.0 phone will be required.

Download the YOUR PHONE app on your phone and PC

The app must be installed on both your Android and Windows phones in order to make them talk to one another.

  • Download it for your phone from the Google Play Store
  • Download the Find the Your Phone app for your PC from the Microsoft Store. It may be already installed on your computer. If so, search your list first.
  • Verify that you are signed in to Microsoft accounts on your computer. You can sign in by using the Settings app's "Account" option. You won't be allowed to continue with the setup if you don't sign in.
  • After the app has been installed on your device, you can open it and log in to your Microsoft account. You will need to consent to allow it to access your phone call log, contacts, media and text messages and to run in the background.

LINK YOUR PHONE & PC

  • Once you have signed in to both devices, they can talk to one another. Make sure your phone and computer are connected to the same Wi Fi network. Next, launch the Your Phone app from your PC.
  • You may see a dialog box asking you to choose between Android or iOS (iPhone users can only send webpages between two devices at the moment). This means you have not signed in to your account on both mobile and computer, or you forgot to log in.
  • After your phone and your PC have established a connection, you will receive a persistent notification on mobile that will ask you to confirm that you are willing to allow the connection to take place. Click "Allow"
  • Your phone should now appear in the Your Phone app for PC. Below your phone's image and name, you will see a dialer icon called "Calls" at its bottom. This is where you will place calls.
  • First, connect your phone to your computer via Bluetooth. Although the Your Phone app offers a simplified method to dialer access, it did not work in my testing. Manually pairing the devices worked on all phones.
  • If you don't know how to use Bluetooth, enable pairing mode on your Android phone. To do this, pull down the notification shade from your home screen and then long-press the Bluetooth icon for settings. If Bluetooth isn't enabled, tap "Pair new phone" or any similar option.
  • Do the same thing on your computer. To access the settings for Bluetooth & Other Devices, tap the Windows key. Once you are there, tap the "Add Bluetooth or another device" button and then tap "Bluetooth" in the box.
  • The same PIN should appear on your phone and computer. To authenticate the connection, tap "Connect" on both devices. (If you don't, then try again or check Microsoft's troubleshooting page.)
  • Next, you will need to open the dialer section of the Your Phone app on the PC and follow the steps. You will receive another notification that requires approval. Another notification will be sent to your phone when you request access the call log. You should see the recent calls appear on your dialer screen if you have approved both of these notifications (and you won't need to repeat this process). This is a sign it's working.
  • It's done! Finally! You're ready to place and receive calls with the Your Phone app on Windows 10.
